Government to provide free sand to beneficiaries under PMAY

Bhubaneswar, June 7: In a recent announcement, Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari revealed that beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) will receive free sand to aid in house construction. The government plans to supply two tractor-loads of sand per beneficiary. A draft proposal for this initiative has been finalized, and permits for sand distribution will soon be issued.

Addressing concerns over road damage, the Minister stated that instead of highway trucks, alternative vehicles will be employed for sand transportation. Currently, highways carry loads of up to 40 tons of sand, which has led to deterioration of roads built under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).

To regulate the process, a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is being developed to specify the types of vehicles permitted for sand transport and the permissible load limits. The SOP is expected to be released shortly.

This move aims to streamline sand supply, ensuring that beneficiaries can access sand affordably and efficiently for constructing their homes.
