Bhubaneswar, April 21: Defying a steep rise in gold prices, buyers across the state turned out in large numbers on Akshaya Tritiya, pushing total sales to around ₹200 crore.
Gold prices have surged by over ₹52,000 compared to last year’s Akshaya Tritiya. Despite the sharp increase, consumers upheld the traditional practice of purchasing gold, albeit with a shift in preference towards lightweight jewellery.
Jewellers reported a growing demand for 18-carat gold ornaments and diamond jewellery, driven by their relatively lower cost. The trend contributed to an estimated 10% growth in overall sales this year.
Data indicates that the price of 22-carat gold, which was around ₹90,000 per 10 grams last year, has risen to over ₹1.42 lakh this year—an increase of nearly 60%. Meanwhile, 24-carat gold prices have crossed ₹1.55 lakh per 10 grams.
With prices at record highs, buyers opted for smaller and lighter pieces, ensuring the continuation of the Akshaya Tritiya tradition despite the cost burden.
