New Delhi, May 3: President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede in Shirgao, Goa, which claimed six lives. President Murmu extended her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery for those who were injured.

In a social media post on X, Droupadi Murmu wrote, "Sad to know about the unfortunate incident of a stampede in Shirgao, Goa, which claimed several lives. I extend my condolences to bereaved family members and pray for quick recovery of the injured.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi offered condolences and in a post wrote, " The news of the death of several devotees and injury of many others in a stampede during the annual pilgrimage to the Lerai Devi Temple in Shirgaon, Goa, is very sad."

"I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wish a speedy recovery to all those injured," the statement read.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the Goa Medical College (GMC), where several victims of the Shirgao stampede are receiving treatment. The tragedy took place during the annual Lairai Devi Jatra at the Shirgaon temple, resulting in six fatalities and leaving over 50 people injured.

Addressing the media, Chief Minister Sawant said, "Six people lost their lives in the stampede, and more than 50 were injured. Upon receiving the news, I immediately visited the site. The injured are currently being treated in the hospital. Over 50,000 devotees attend the Jatra each year. This is a deeply unfortunate incident." He further added, "Prime Minister Modi called me to inquire about the situation and assured that the Centre would extend all necessary support."
