Shubman Gill secures victory with a record double century
Captain Shubman Gill scored an unbeaten 223 to secure an eight-wicket victory over West Indies in Guwahati. India successfully chased a daunting 405-run target in just 43.3 overs. Match statistics confirm this as only the second successful chase of over 400 runs in ODI cricket history. Gill achieved his double century in merely 117 balls, setting a new global record for the fastest double-hundred in the format.
Guwahati offered a batting paradise with lightning-quick outfields and negligible turn. This match became the very first in ODI history to feature five individual centuries. West Indies batters Amir Jangoo (114), Shai Hope (104), and John Campbell (101) powered their team to 405 for 7. Rohit Sharma partnered with Gill during the chase, contributing 101 runs. Sharma remains the only other player with multiple ODI double centuries. Contextually, Indian cricket continues to redefine modern run-scoring benchmarks on flat subcontinental pitches.
Kuldeep Yadav emerged as a key factor during the first innings, finishing with figures of 2 for 65 in his ten overs. These wickets made him the second-quickest Indian bowler to reach 200 ODI dismissals. India faced early challenges when fast bowler Prasidh Krishna left the field injured after delivering five overs. Debutant Auqib Nabi and part-time spinner Naman Dhir managed the remaining overs effectively. West Indies scored only 82 runs for the loss of five wickets in the final 11 overs, preventing an even higher target.
