Bhopal, July 7: In a touching gesture that has won widespread admiration, a man in Madhya Pradesh's capital Bhopal arranged the remarriage of his widowed daughter-in-law and personally performed her Kanyadaan, a role traditionally carried out by a bride's parents.
The wedding ceremony took place at a resort in the Kulukhedi area of Bhopal on Monday. Stepping into the role of a father, the woman's father-in-law completed the customary marriage rituals and blessed her as she began a new chapter in life.
According to family members, the woman lost her husband to cancer some time ago. Following their son's death, the family decided to support her future and treat her as their own daughter, eventually arranging her remarriage.
Speaking on the occasion, the woman's father-in-law, Dinesh Vairagi, said, “We consider ourselves fortunate to have had her as our daughter-in-law. She has always been a wonderful member of our family. We felt that she deserved a fresh start in life, and therefore we arranged her remarriage and performed her kanyadaan ourselves.”
He also appealed to society to support the remarriage of widowed women. “If any family faces a similar situation, they should seriously consider remarriage. We have accepted her as our daughter and are happy to see her begin a new journey,” he said.
The family's decision was widely appreciated by relatives, neighbours and guests attending the ceremony, many of whom described it as a compassionate and progressive step that could help change social attitudes toward widowed women.
The bride's father, Rambabu Vairagi, expressed heartfelt gratitude to his daughter's in-laws. “My daughter's remarriage is taking place today, and I pray that everyone is blessed with in-laws like hers. They have done far more than we could have ever expected. I never imagined that they would not only arrange her remarriage but also perform her kanyadaan,” he said.
Recalling the support extended by the family after the death of his son-in-law, Rambabu said that about a year later, his daughter's father-in-law assured them that she was now his daughter and promised to arrange her remarriage. “He kept every word of that promise. He brought her home, allowed her to choose the gifts she wanted and provided everything accordingly,” he added.
Thanking his daughter's in-laws for giving her a new beginning, Rambabu said their kindness and compassion had restored hope and happiness in her life.
