Eight injured in blast at Kanpur Market, police recover illegal firecrackers

Kanpur, Oct 9: Eight people, including a woman, were injured on Wednesday evening (October 8, 2025) when a powerful explosion occurred on two scooters parked in a busy market in Kanpur, police said. The blast took place around 7 p.m. at Mishri Bazaar in the Moolganj area, a locality known for its bustling firecracker market.

Following the explosion, authorities launched a search operation and recovered a large quantity of illegal firecrackers and cotton bombs from several locations, including a garment shop. Preliminary investigations have revealed that firecrackers were being illegally stored and sold in the area, which may have contributed to the explosion.

“After the blast in the trunk of a scooter parked near Abdullah’s shop, the police quickly took action. A joint operation is underway with the fire brigade, bomb disposal squad, and forensic team to secure the area,” said Raghubir Lal, a senior police officer.

During the ongoing search, police discovered a significant cache of illegal firecrackers and cotton bombs. Several individuals have been detained for questioning, and the authorities have promised strict action against those responsible. Investigations are also underway to determine whether any departmental personnel were negligent in allowing such illegal activity.

“The police are conducting thorough searches in the area, and we urge the public to avoid rumors and cooperate fully with the ongoing operations,” Mr. Lal added.

Local residents and shopkeepers reported hearing a loud explosion, followed by a cloud of smoke and debris that engulfed the area. Authorities are continuing their investigation and taking measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
