Bhubaneswar, March 27: During a visit to Koraput district, Akhil Kumar Mishra, the Additional Director General of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) and Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), addressed a seminar on "Sociology of Communication" at the Central University of Odisha (CUO), Koraput, today. As the Chief Guest, Mishra emphasized the critical role of timely, transparent, and accessible communication in the digital age, especially in bridging the gap between policy creation and public understanding.
He stressed that effective communication tools are essential for ensuring that government schemes and welfare programs reach the grassroots, contributing to inclusive national development. Mishra further underscored the need for innovative outreach methods, particularly through digital media platforms and community-driven communication, to boost citizen participation and enhance public trust in governance.
The seminar saw the participation of notable personalities, including the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Narasingh Charan Panda; Head of the Department of Sociology, Dr. Kapila Khemundu; Head of the Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Dr. Nikhil Gouda; and Associate Professor Dr. Sourav Gupta, along with faculty members, media professionals, and students.
Vice-Chancellor Shri Panda emphasized that students pursuing journalism and mass communication must adhere to the highest ethical standards in their profession. He highlighted the significance of responsible journalism in shaping public opinion and ensuring the dissemination of accurate and verified information. He urged students to act as agents of positive change by promoting fact-based reporting and combating misinformation. "Ethical journalism is essential for credibility and for reinforcing democratic values," he stated.
The seminar fostered active participation from faculty, media professionals, and students, who engaged in insightful discussions on evolving communication practices, challenges in government outreach, and the media's role in development narratives.
The event concluded with an interactive session where participants highlighted the importance of developing effective communication tools to improve public service delivery and awareness campaigns.
