Bhubaneswar, September 1: The Commissionerate Police has announced strict restrictions on the use of DJ music systems, laser lights, and firecrackers during the Bhasani (immersion) processions of Durga Puja celebrations this year in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

The decision, finalized at a preparatory meeting held at Police Seva Bhawan, permits only traditional musical instruments during the processions. Officials stressed that the curbs are aimed at ensuring peace, maintaining order, and reducing both noise and light pollution during the festivities.

Police authorities have warned of stringent action against violators, reaffirming that the celebrations must uphold the sanctity of rituals while avoiding disturbances to local communities.

The meeting was attended by Khordha and Cuttack Collectors, the Twin City Police Commissioner, and several local MLAs along with representatives of various Puja Committees. However, Bhubaneswar-Central MLA Ananta Narayan Jena, North MLA Susant Kumar Rout, Jatni MLA Bibhuti Bhusan Balabantaray, and Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das were absent despite being invited. The reason behind their non-attendance remains unclear.

A Puja Committee member present at the meeting highlighted the importance of such interactions, stating, “These meetings provide us with a platform to raise our concerns. Around 50 percent of the issues get resolved, but it would be better if more problems were addressed ahead of the festival.”

It is also noteworthy that the Orissa High Court, in a directive issued on August 26, prohibited the construction of temporary Toranas (pandal gates) on public roads and footpaths without prior administrative approval. The court emphasized that public safety must remain the top priority during festive celebrations.
