Bhubaneswar, October 29: East Coast Railway (ECoR) has intensified safety measures and arranged assistance for passengers stranded at various railway stations following disruptions caused by cyclonic storm ‘Arnab’ and heavy rainfall in southern Odisha.
Rainfall of around 550 mm has led to a sharp rise in the water level of the Bahuda River in Ganjam district. The water level at Baghalati Dam on the river has crossed the danger mark, resulting in a corresponding rise in water levels near the railway bridge between Ichchapuram (IPM) and Jhadupudi (JPI). The water level at the railway bridge has also crossed the danger mark, prompting the railway authorities to take precautionary measures.
In view of the prevailing conditions, ECoR has prioritised passenger safety and the smooth management of railway operations. Several trains operating on the Howrah–Chennai route have been diverted as a precautionary measure.
The railway authorities are maintaining close coordination with the district administration to obtain regular updates on river water levels and assess the developing situation. A high-level meeting with the State Government has also been held to review the situation and coordinate measures to ensure the safety of passengers and railway operations.
