Bhubaneswar, October 28: Severe Cyclone Arnab made landfall south of Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh late Tuesday night, bringing powerful winds and torrential rainfall. Wind speeds at landfall were estimated at 125–135 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 150 kmph.
The cyclone caused widespread damage across coastal Andhra Pradesh, uprooting large trees, blocking roads and damaging houses, rooftops and hoardings. Several areas, including Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Kakinada, reported damage. Power supply and telecommunications services were also disrupted in many places.
Southern Odisha on alert
Although the cyclone is not expected to make a direct landfall in Odisha, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast strong winds and heavy rainfall across several southern districts.
Wind speeds could reach 60–70 kmph, with gusts of up to 80 kmph. Ganjam, Gajapati, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri are among the districts likely to experience strong winds from early Wednesday.
The cyclone is expected to move through southern Odisha, passing via Malkangiri before heading towards Chhattisgarh. Its outer circulation could also affect parts of western Odisha.
The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in the affected districts on October 28 and 29. Continuous rain and strong winds could increase the risk of landslides, particularly in hilly areas of southern Odisha.
Flood concerns in major rivers
Persistent rainfall could cause water levels to rise in the Nagavali, Rushikulya and Godavari rivers, raising concerns about possible flooding. Heavy rainfall in Chhattisgarh could also increase water levels in the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi River.
Authorities and residents in vulnerable areas have been urged to remain alert to changing weather conditions and follow official advisories.
Cyclone to weaken after landfall
The cyclone is expected to gradually weaken as it moves inland towards Chhattisgarh. However, strong winds and heavy rainfall may continue across parts of southern Odisha until Wednesday night.
Rainfall has been affecting Odisha since Tuesday, with coastal and southern districts experiencing showers and increasing wind speeds. Conditions worsened in Ganjam and neighbouring areas from Tuesday evening as the cyclone's influence spread across the region.
Residents in landslide-prone areas and those living near rivers should exercise caution and follow instructions issued by local authorities.
