Cuttack: Six arrested following clashes during Durga Puja immersion

Cuttack, Oct 4: The Commissionerate Police arrested six persons late Friday night in connection with a violent clash that erupted during the Durga Puja idol immersion procession in Dargha Bazaar.

The confrontation resulted in injuries to six people, including Cuttack Deputy Commissioner of Police Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 1.30 am on Saturday when members of the Jhanjhirimangala Puja Committee were taking out their immersion procession through Hatipokhari. Tension flared after locals allegedly objected to certain songs being played.

Police Commissioner S. Dev Datta Singh reported that the idol immersion ceremony concluded peacefully around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. However, between 2 a.m. and 2:30 a.m., a fierce altercation broke out, involving stone-pelting that caused minor injuries to six individuals.

“All injured persons were promptly admitted to the hospital for treatment,” Singh said.

“Using drone surveillance and CCTV footage, we identified the persons involved. Six suspects were arrested overnight and will be produced in court today,” he said.

DCP Dnyandeo suffered an eye injury requiring stitches, but his condition remains stable.

Commissioner Singh assured that none of the injuries were serious, and all six injured are expected to be discharged by the end of the day.

Authorities have increased police deployment in the area, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
