Bhubaneswar, Sept 16: The Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) has successfully farmed the rare ganoderma mushroom, known for its medicinal properties.
After the successful production of the ganoderma mushroom in its farm, the OUAT is researching other aspects of the rare species and efforts are on for commercial farming in the state soon.
“Efforts are on to promote commercial production of ganoderma mushroom in Odisha in collaboration with the agriculture department for export. The OUAT has got success after research on it under the All India Coordinated Research Project on Mushroom,” said Vice Chancellor Prof. Pravat Kumar Roul.
The ganoderma mushroom is cultivated at a temperature between 25 and 32 degree Celsius. It can be produced in low-cost polythene chambers with minor control of climate. It takes 45 to 50 days for harvest, said OUAT scientist Dr Bikram Keshari Pani.
It can be farmed throughout the year using climate control mechanisms, he added.
“The ganoderma mushroom produced in OUAT farm has 25 percent organic potential. While others are using logs and sawdust for farming, we are focusing on the use of paddy straw at OUAT,” Dr Pani said.
Medicinal properties of ganoderma mushroom
Ganoderma mushroom is traditionally used in Chinese medicine for centuries. It is rich in a wide range of medicinal properties. It has high demand in China and Japan for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immune-boosting properties.
It reduces stress and helps in boosting immunity and mood. It is also known for its anti-cancer properties, regenerating liver cells.
Research suggests that ganoderma mushroom can regulate blood pressure and sugar levels. Similarly, it protects against aging and improves skin quality.
