Lucknow, July 12: In a firm bid to uphold discipline during the ongoing Kanwar Yatra, 27 police personnel have been suspended in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district for unauthorized absence from duty. The suspension was ordered by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ashish Tiwari, who cited "serious negligence and indiscipline" during a crucial period of public safety management.
Among those suspended are one Sub-Inspector, ten Head Constables — including three women — and three attendants. Their absence during peak Kanwar Yatra operations triggered immediate action from the district police administration.
“No negligence will be tolerated during the Kanwar Yatra. The Saharanpur police are on high alert to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the pilgrimage,” SSP Tiwari stated.
To personally monitor arrangements, the SSP has been conducting surprise late-night inspections and patrolling key Yatra routes. He recently reviewed Route No. 02, which connects Bhagwanpur to Fatehpur, Chhutmalpur, Kalsia, Behat, and Mirzapur — a stretch that usually sees lower footfall of Kanwariyas. On-site, he issued directives to officers and warned that any further laxity would be met with strict consequences.
Highlighting the significance of the Yatra, SSP Tiwari stressed that police presence during the month-long pilgrimage is vital for public order and safety. He reiterated that dereliction of duty not only undermines operational efficiency but also violates administrative protocols.
The Kanwar Yatra, held during the holy month of Shravan, draws millions of devotees of Lord Shiva, making it one of the largest annual religious gatherings in Uttar Pradesh.
