Bhubaneswar, June 14: The Odia film Bou Butu Bhoota has set a new benchmark in the state's film industry, recording an impressive ₹51.2 lakh in box office collections on its opening day. Released during the Raja festival, the film has made history as the highest first-day earner for a ghost-themed Odia movie.
Produced under the personal banner of actor Babushaan and backed by his wife Trupti, the film was released in 61 theatres across Odisha. The movie has received a massive response from audiences, with theatres witnessing near-capacity crowds, confirming the pre-release buzz surrounding the project.
With its remarkable opening, Bou Butu Bhoota has eclipsed the previous record held by megastar Anubhav Mohanty’s Karma, which released on October 9, 2024, during the Dussehra festival. Karma had earned ₹37.20 lakh on its first day, setting a high standard that has now been surpassed.
Industry analysts and trade experts believe Bou Butu Bhoota has the potential to cross ₹15 crore in total collections — a rare feat for an Odia horror comedy. The film stars Babushaan in the lead role, paired once again with his longtime on-screen co-star Archita. His mother, veteran actress Aparajita, also plays a pivotal role in the film.
The soundtrack, composed by Gaurav Anand — a frequent collaborator of Babushaan — has struck a chord with audiences. Songs like Oda Lage and Dunguthili are trending across platforms, while a special appearance by Sundari Cookies in one of the songs has added to the film's mass appeal.
The story is written by Mohammad Imran, with dialogues penned by Pranab Prasanna Rath. Direction is helmed by Jagadish Mishra.
