BNP's Tarique Rahman Calls for Law and Order Following Landmark Victory in Bangladesh Election

Dhaka, February 14: Tarique Rahman, the chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has emphasized the importance of upholding law and order "at any cost," following the party's landslide victory in the recent parliamentary elections. In a call for national unity, Rahman urged the citizens of Bangladesh to cooperate in fostering a safe and compassionate country as he is poised to take office as prime minister for the first time.

The BNP’s remarkable victory in the 13th parliamentary elections, held on Friday, saw the party securing more than two-thirds of the seats, solidifying its commanding majority. Rahman, who is set to replace interim government leader Muhammad Yunus, addressed the media the day after the elections, reiterating the need for a collective effort in nation-building.

"Everyone must contribute to building a safe and humane Bangladesh. This time, it's crucial for all citizens to take responsibility in rebuilding the country," Rahman stated at a press conference. "No one should face injustice, and law and order must be maintained without compromise."

Rahman further celebrated the outcome of the elections, calling it a victory for the people of Bangladesh. "This is the triumph of freedom-loving citizens. Today, everyone is free. Congratulations to all, and with everyone’s involvement, the path toward a fascism-free state begins," he declared.

He also underscored the significance of inclusive governance. The thoughts of all citizens are important in building the nation. We will work to construct the country based on everyone's input," Rahman added.

The elections were especially significant following a period of intense political instability, marked by protests and violence. These elections were conducted after the fall of Sheikh Hasina's 15-year rule in August 2024, and amidst a fragile security situation, including attacks on minority communities. The BNP won 209 out of the 297 contested seats, while its ally, Jamaat-e-Islami, secured 68 seats. The Awami League, led by Hasina, was barred from participating in the election. The voter turnout was 59.44%, with results for two constituencies—Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4—pending, and the election in one seat pwas ostponed due to the death of a candidate.
