BJP Surges in WB Polls, Leads in 195 Seats; Mamata Ahead in Bhabanipur

Kolkata, May 4: The BJP has surged ahead in the West Bengal Assembly polls, crossing the majority mark with 185 seats, while the TMC trails at 91, according to the Election Commission. The BJP’s progress signals a significant shift in the state’s political landscape, with early trends showing strong performances in border, tribal, and industrial regions. However, the TMC has maintained its grip in Kolkata and some rural areas.

While the BJP looks set for a breakthrough, Mamata Banerjee remains ahead in her Bhabanipur constituency, leading by over 16,000 votes against the BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari. The Bhabanipur race has been volatile, but Banerjee's lead provides early relief for the TMC. In Nandigram, however, Adhikari is leading over TMC’s Pabitra Kar by 3,135 votes.

With vote share trends showing the BJP at 44.8% and the TMC at 41.7%, the numbers reflect a significant erosion in the TMC’s base. The BJP is gaining ground in several constituencies that were previously TMC strongholds, indicating a deeper political shift.

TMC heavyweights like Udayan Guha and Manas Ranjan Bhunia are trailing in their constituencies, raising concerns within the ruling camp. BJP leads in several key seats across North Bengal, Junglemahal, and industrial areas, while the TMC holds onto urban constituencies like Bhabanipur and Kasba. As the counting progresses, further shifts in trends are expected.
