Bhubaneswar, May 14: The Crime Branch has arrested the prime accused in the sensational Soumya Ranjan murder case. Chinu alias Ranjit Patra was apprehended for his alleged involvement in the brutal assault that led to the death of GRP constable Soumya Ranjan. According to the Crime Branch, Ranjit had kicked Soumya in the face and repeatedly assaulted him with extreme force. With his arrest, the total number of accused arrested in the case has gone up to 13. The Crime Branch shared the details through an official press release.

The incident had taken place on May 7 in the outskirts of Bhubaneswar under the area. Soumya Ranjan and one of his friends were travelling on a motorcycle when their bike allegedly collided with a scooter carrying two women. Following the accident, an argument broke out between the two parties.

The complainant later alleged that Soumya had misbehaved with her and torn her dress during the altercation. Soon after, locals gathered at the spot and allegedly attacked Soumya. Reports stated that despite police presence at the scene, Soumya was tied up and brutally assaulted by the mob, resulting in his death.

The case was initially investigated by the Commissionerate Police before being handed over to the Crime Branch. Earlier, 12 accused persons had been arrested in connection with the case. With the arrest of the prime accused Ranjit Patra, the total number of arrests has now reached 13.
