Bhubaneswar, April 1: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) had targeted to collect Rs 115 crore holding tax this financial year. However, the civic body managed to collect Rs 71 crore.
The civic body collected highest 64 percent from the southeast zone while failed in its collect its tagetted revenue in north zone.
A total of Rs 71,29,13,002 was collected from all the three zones while the demand was Rs 83 crore and the civic body had set a target of Rs 115 crore.
Rs 21 crore was collected from southeast zone against the target of Rs 33 crore. Similarly, Rs 24 crore was collected from southwest zone against the target of Rs 39 crore. In north zone, the civic body managed to collect Rs 25 crore while the target was Rs 43 crore.
Every year, the BMC sets a target for each ward officer to collect holding tax, but they find it difficult to meet.
Thousands of single-story buildings have turned multi-storeyed in areas like Unit - III, Unit - IV, Unit - VI, Unit - IX, Pokhariput, and Chandrasekharpur in the capital city of Odisha.
However, the holding tax is being collected as single-storeyed buildings from these houses. It needs reassessment of tax for proper calculation of holding tax of buildings. The ward officers and zonal deputy commissioners have been directed for reassessment.
However, nobody is working on it which results in the loss of revenue in crores, said a senior BMC official on condition of anonymity.
