Bhadrak, June 4: In a major anti-corruption crackdown, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested an Income Tax Department official in Odisha's Bhadrak after allegedly catching him red-handed while accepting a bribe from a complainant.

The accused, identified as Ramesh Kumar Mohanty, serves as the Office Superintendent at the Income Tax Office in Bhadrak. He is accused of demanding ₹5,000 from an individual for facilitating the cancellation of a duplicate PAN card.

Following a complaint, the Bhubaneswar unit of the CBI launched a trap operation and reportedly caught Mohanty while he was accepting ₹4,000 from the complainant as part of the bribe amount. The tainted money was recovered, and the official was immediately taken into custody.

CBI officials have registered a case against Mohanty under RC 04(A)/2026-BBS. Investigators said the accused had allegedly agreed to accept illegal gratification in return for processing the PAN card-related request.

The agency has intensified its investigation to ascertain the full extent of the alleged corruption and to determine whether any other officials were involved. The accused remains under the scanner as further inquiries continue.
