Munich expats celebrated Nuakhai with authentic traditional harvest rituals.
Odia expats residing in Germany gathered in large numbers on Saturday, September 26, to celebrate Nuakhai Bhetghat 2026. Odia Samaj Munich e.V. organized this vibrant harvest festival at a venue on Milbertshofener Straße. Families from across the region arrived to honor their cultural roots and share a strong sense of community far from home. Nuakhai serves as Western Odisha's premier agrarian festival, deeply rooted in expressing gratitude for the season's new crops before consuming them.
Traditional Nabaanna rituals
Festivities kicked off with traditional warm greetings known as Juhar. Volunteers welcomed arriving guests by applying sandalwood tilak. Following this reception, the community commenced the sacred Nabaanna ceremony. Members lit ceremonial lamps and invoked divine blessings from Maa Samaleswari. They offered newly harvested rice to the regional deity before distributing prasad to all attendees. Younger participants respectfully sought blessings from community elders, honoring the cherished Nuakhai Juhar tradition. Everyone then gathered for joyful interactions and memorable group photographs.
Authentic Odia culinary delights
Food formed a central part of this cultural gathering. Organizers served a traditional feast featuring rice, dal, potal kasa, and tomato khajuri khatta. Guests also enjoyed authentic regional dishes like saga and sweet kheeri. To bring the true taste of Western Odisha to Germany, the special menu included Sambalpuri favorites like Ambil and Malpua. Savory traditional snacks such as Kardi Bara and Chaula Bara delighted the attendees, providing a deeply comforting taste of their homeland.
Cultural performances and community spirit
Children and adult community members delivered energetic Sambalpuri dance performances that captivated the entire audience. Guest artist Rima Mishra traveled from Kolkata to deliver a set of soulful melodies. Her impressive vocal presentation quickly became the musical highlight of the evening program. Odia Samaj Munich representatives expressed deep gratitude to all members, non-members, and well-wishers who joined the gathering. Organizers proudly noted that their shared devotion to keeping their Odia identity alive continues to thrive in Munich. They promised another joyful harvest celebration for the diaspora next year.
