A Landmark Diplomatic Welcome

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Trinidad and Tobago on Friday to a remarkably warm and historic welcome, kicking off the second leg of his five-nation tour. The visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister to the Caribbean nation in over two decades, was marked by an exceptional diplomatic gesture. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, dressed in traditional Indian attire, personally greeted him at the Piarco International Airport. She was accompanied by her entire 38-member cabinet, a clear signal of the significance the country places on this visit.

After the ceremonial Guard of Honour, PM Modi also took a moment to interact with members of the Indian diaspora who had gathered to welcome him, acknowledging the deep cultural ties that connect the two nations.

Strengthening Bilateral Partnership

The agenda for the two-day visit is focused on reinforcing the partnership between the two countries. Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. Discussions are expected to cover key areas of cooperation, including trade, energy, technology, and cultural exchange.

In a move that emphasises the importance of the relationship, PM Modi will also address a Joint Session of the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago. Later, he is scheduled to attend a community event at the National Cycling Velodrome in Couva, further engaging with the vibrant Indian diaspora. Before his arrival, PM Modi stated he was "looking forward to deepening ties with a valued partner in the Caribbean." This visit is seen as a crucial step in adding fresh momentum to that long-standing relationship.
