Bhubaneswar, April 4: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi will hit the campaign trail in Assam on April 5 (Sunday) ahead of the Assembly elections.
He will campaign with a rally planned in Khowang in Dibrugarh. He is set to address voters in support of BJP candidate Chakradhar Gogoi ahead of the elections, reinforcing message of development, governance, and continuity.
Polling for the 126-member Assam Assembly is scheduled for April 9, with counting of votes to take place on May 4.
Districts like Dibrugarh and Tinsukia has a significant Odia presence, mostly migrants, many of whom work in tea estates. This community forms an important voter base, and outreach by a Chief Minister is aimed at building a strong cultural and emotional connect.
The visit follows his recent campaign activities in neighbouring West Bengal, where he held roadshow and campaigned in favour of BJP candidates in several places. Majhi attended nomination rallies of BJP candidates Dhruba Saha (Rampurhat), Nikhil Banerjee (Hansan), Anil Singh (Nalhati) and Rinki Ghosh (Murarai).
Notably, on Thursday, Majhi asserted that Majhi after Anga (Bihar) and Kalinga (Odisha), it is now Banga’s (West Bengal) turn to get a BJP Government, as he campaigned in the poll-bound State.
Birbhum has a significant tribal presence, with Scheduled Tribes accounting for about 6.92% of the district’s population, according to the 2011 census. Santals form the predominant tribal community in the district, the same community to which Chief Minister Majhi belongs to.
