Bhubaneswar, August 31: A total of 1,187 lecturer positions are currently lying vacant across 17 universities in Odisha, as revealed by Higher Education Minister Suryabansi Suraj during a session of the Odisha Assembly.
Responding to a query, Minister Suraj informed the Assembly that the state government has initiated the process to fill these vacancies as soon as possible. Out of the 1,911 sanctioned lecturer posts in these universities, only 714 are currently filled, up leaving 1,187 positions vacant.
The Minister further detailed that the vacancies include 225 Professor posts, 401 Associate Professor posts, and 561 Assistant Professor posts. To address this, the state government has started the recruitment process for 1,497 lecturer positions through the Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC).
In addition, 675 guest lecturers are currently engaged in teaching across various universities in the state. Minister Suraj also noted that there are 2,398 sanctioned lecturer posts in 66 government colleges, with 1,674 lecturers currently serving in these institutions.
Moreover, 249 Odisha Education Service officers are actively involved in teaching at different universities and stand-alone higher secondary schools. The Minister assured the Assembly that the vacant posts in government degree colleges would also be filled up through OPSC.
