Bhubaneswar, July 4: Odisha’s shrine city Puri which is a Municipal body now, is going to be a municipal corporation shortly.
In a bid to address the urban needs in a robust manner, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced it on Friday.
The CM said, Pilgrim City Puri which is a Municipality now, will be upgraded to a Municipal Corporation soon.
With it, the state would have six Municipal Corporations.
This significant announcement ahead of the Bahuda Yatra cheered the people of Puri and devotees as the premier urban local body will be further developed by the H&UD department after getting the status of a Municipal Corporation.
Citing the rising population and the steady influx of pilgrims to the town for the abode of Lord Jagannath, Majhi said that urban restructuring is now essential in most of the Odisha towns. The Puri town’s transformation aims to improve infrastructure, governance, and service delivery to meet future demands.
The CM also revealed that ten nearby panchayats will be merged into the town as part of the expansion process. These panchayats will be integrated into Puri’s urban framework, allowing for better coordination and development planning.
The process to transform the Puri Municipality into a Municipal Corporation will formally executed from the Bahuda Yatra of the trinity, said the CM during a press conference.
