Odisha Youth Build Nests to Bring Back Birds

Keonjhar, May 19: In a heartwarming effort to restore ecological balance and revive the lost harmony of rural life, the youth of Raikala village in Patna block of Keonjhar district have taken a unique initiative in crafting artificial nests to welcome birds back to their village.

As urbanization, deforestation, and pollution continue to push native bird species towards extinction, several birds like sparrows, crows, and cuckoos have become rare in village surroundings. To counter this, the local youth have started building artificial nests using natural materials like sticks, dry grass, clay, and leaves. These handmade nests are carefully installed on trees, in gardens, and around homes to attract birds.

The project has not only caught the attention of villagers but also become a source of inspiration for others. Villagers have already spotted birds nesting in over a hundred such artificial shelters. Additionally, arrangements are being made to provide water in clay pots for the birds, especially during hot days.

The return of birds and their joyful chirping has sparked hope and enthusiasm among the community, particularly among the young generation. They believe that one day, the village will again echo with the natural sounds of birds, just like in the old days.

“We are trying to rebuild a lost bond between humans and nature,” said a young volunteer. “If we can bring back even a few bird species, it will be a big win for us.”

The effort is gaining appreciation not just for its environmental impact but also as a symbol of youth-led change.
