Burla, May 9: A new ragging controversy has surfaced at the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla following allegations from a first-year postgraduate (PG) MBBS student. The student claims he was harassed and threatened with a knife by a senior PG student while heading to the college canteen.
The incident reportedly occurred when the junior student was on his way to have food at the college canteen. He alleges that a second-year PG student not only ragged him but also chased him with a knife in an attempt to attack him. The matter came to light after the student informed his father, who subsequently lodged a complaint with the anti-ragging cell of the institution.
In response to the complaint, the Dean of VIMSAR, Dr. Pradeep Kumar Mohanty, has reportedly directed officials to investigate the allegations and submit a report.
This is not the first time VIMSAR has been embroiled in ragging controversies. In February 2025, a second-year MBBS student accused two third-year students of physical assault and verbal abuse. In October 2024, a violent clash occurred between PG students and house surgeons during the annual function of the UG Students' Association, resulting in injuries to three house surgeons.
Despite stringent anti-ragging measures, incidents of ragging continue to surface at educational institutions across the country. Between 2012 and 2023, reports indicate that 78 students lost their lives due to ragging, while thousands suffered inhumane torture. The recurring nature of such incidents highlights the need for more effective enforcement of anti-ragging laws and increased awareness among students and faculty.
As the investigation into the latest allegations at VIMSAR unfolds, students, parents, and faculty members are urging the administration to take swift and decisive action to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment for all.
