Women who shaped Odisha: Unsung pillars of pride and progress

Bhubaneswar, April 1: On the occasion of Utkal Divas, as Odisha celebrates its rich history and identity, it is equally important to honour the remarkable women whose courage, vision, and dedication helped shape the state’s journey.

From the freedom struggle to social reform and cultural revival, women have played a pivotal role in building the spirit of Odisha.

One of the most prominent names is Rama Devi, fondly known as the “Mother of Odisha.” A close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, she led movements for independence, worked tirelessly for women’s empowerment, and dedicated her life to social service. Her contribution continues to inspire generations.

Another towering figure is Malati Choudhury, who was actively involved in the freedom struggle and later focused on rural development and education. Her work for the upliftment of tribal and underprivileged communities remains invaluable.

In the political sphere, leaders like Nandini Satpathy broke barriers and paved the way for women in governance. As one of the few women Chief Ministers in India, she played a significant role in shaping Odisha’s political landscape.

Odisha’s cultural identity has also been enriched by women like Sanjukta Panigrahi, who brought global recognition to Odissi dance. Through her art, she preserved and popularised Odisha’s classical heritage across the world.

In literature, writers such as Dr. Pratibha Ray have given voice to social issues, women’s experiences, and the essence of Odia culture, earning national and international acclaim.

These women, among many others, have not only contributed to Odisha’s formation and growth but have also strengthened its identity in diverse fields. Their stories reflect resilience, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to society.

As Odisha celebrates Utkal Divas, remembering these inspiring women is a tribute to their legacy and a reminder that the progress of a state is deeply rooted in the strength and spirit of its women.
