Bhubaneswar: Tezaab literally means Acid. This is an action-romance film and was released on Nov 11, 1988. This 1988 top grosser that gave Madhuri Dixit her first big break, also made her an overnight star – the Ek Do Teen… girl of Indian Cineam, is celebrating it's 36 glorious years. The film also catapulted the Jhakas star Anil Kapoor to the world of supestardom.
The film was directed, produced and co-written by N. Chandra and the highly popular music of the film has been composed by Laxmikant–Pyarelal. The film was a golden jubilee hit and was the biggest blockbuster of the year, mainly for the chartbusters and the action of Munna (Anil Kapoor).
AMIR KHAN NANA PATEKAR IN TEZAAB ORIGINAL
Tezaab was to be made a political drama with Aamir Khan and Nana Patekar. Nana Patekar had shot for some scenes, but later N Chandra shelved the film and started a new film with Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar with new story line but retained the film's title as Tezaab. Nana was signed for the role of Lothia Pathan. However, he was later replaced by Kiran Kumar.
TEZAAB GAMECHANGER FOR MADHURI
When the film was released Madhuri Dixit had gone to US for a family vacation. When she returned to Mumbai, there was a large crowd waiting for her at the airport, chanting 'Mohini, Mohini’….
In fact, Meenakshi Sheshadri was the original choice for the lead. But she was replaced by Madhuri Dixit due to higher signing amount, besides date issues.
WHY N CHANDRA RELUCTANT TO CAST ANIL KAPOOR?
After giving hits like Ankush in 1986 and Pratighaat in 1987, N Chandra had a script ready but wasn't finding a hero. Boney Kapoor got the whiff and asked Chandra to cast Anil Kapoor. But N Chandra wasn't keen to cast him.
After Mr India became superhit, Anil Kapoor was very busy those days. But Boney Kapoor asked N Chandra to just narrate the script to Anil Kapoor. N Chandra narrated the script to Anil Kapoor, and he liked the role of Munna. But he said he can’t give him dates for at least two years and N Chandra wasn't ready for it.
Boney Kapoor then stepped in and asked N Chandra to keep his crew ready for shooting on Anil’s cancelled shoot schedule days.
N Chandra had a very miserable time. He kept rushing to shoot wherever Anil Kapoor's shoot got canceled. This Boney trick made N Chandra complete Tezaab much earlier than all the films Anil Kapoor signed prior to Tezaab.
SHAHRUKH’S ‘MANNAT’ IN TEZAAB
The bungalow owned by Anupam Kher in the film is currently owned by king Khan aka Shahrukh Khan. The male version of Ek Do Teen, which featured Anil Kapoor along with Madhuri Dixit was shot in the bungalow, “Mannat" which is known as SRK's residence (View the main image). In the 80's decade, the same place was known as “Villa Vienna” and was used for shooting films.
