New Delhi, October 19: The Central Government has appointed Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar as the new Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW).

Her appointment was made under Section 3 of the National Commission for Women Act 1990, and she will serve for a term of three years or until she reaches the age of 65, whichever comes first.

Rahatkar, the 9th Chairperson of the NCW, previously led the Maharashtra State Commission for Women from 2016 to 2021.

During her tenure, she spearheaded numerous initiatives focused on women's empowerment, including support for acid attack survivors, connecting self-help groups to government schemes, and launching a 24/7 helpline service for women.

She also played a significant role in legal reforms, particularly in the areas of child protection (POCSO), anti-triple talaq measures, and human trafficking prevention.

In addition to her work in women's development, Rahatkar has held various leadership roles in politics and social organizations, including serving as Mayor of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar from 2007 to 2010. She holds degrees in Physics and History and has authored books on women’s legal issues and urban development.

Rahatkar’s extensive experience in advocacy, governance, and women’s rights sets a strong foundation for her leadership of the NCW.
