Bhubaneswar, Apr 20: Veteran Communist leader and former Odisha state secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI), Dibakar Nayak, passed away on Sunday at the age of 72, party sources confirmed.
Nayak, who had been unwell for some time, breathed his last at the CPI's state headquarters, Bhagavati Bhavan, located in the Kharvel Nagar area of Bhubaneswar.
Leaders across political parties, along with numerous supporters, gathered at Bhagavati Bhavan to pay their floral tributes as his mortal remains were kept there for public homage.
Nayak began his political journey with the All India Students’ Federation (AISF), the student wing of the CPI, inspired by leftist ideologies. He went on to join the CPI, where he rose to serve as the state secretary and later became a member of the party’s national executive.
Hailing from Sendchitira village in Bhadrak district, Nayak also served as the editor of the CPI’s publication Nua Dunia during his career.
Following the tributes in Bhubaneswar, his body was taken to his native village in Bhadrak for the final rites.
