Bhubaneswar, August 22: There are sporting occasions that one watches, and there are sporting occasions that one experiences. Today, 22 August 2026, I had the privilege of experiencing one such memorable occasion—the World Athletics Continental Tour Silver at the iconic Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
Watching elite athletes from across the world compete on the same track and field where Indian athletes are increasingly making their mark was both inspiring and deeply satisfying. It was a reminder that athletics is not merely a collection of sporting events; it is a celebration of human potential, discipline, perseverance, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
The World Athletics Continental Tour Silver is the second-highest tier of the Continental Tour and forms part of the premier global one-day track and field circuit. It brings together high-level international competition, substantial prize money of US$75,000, and valuable Category B World Ranking points, which can play an important role in athletes’ qualification for global championships.
For Indian athletes, the significance is even greater. Competing against some of the world’s finest athletes on home soil provides an invaluable opportunity to test themselves in familiar surroundings, gain international experience and build confidence before major continental competitions, including the upcoming meet in Aichi-Nagoya.
Athletics—the Mother of All Sports
Athletics is often described as the mother of all sports, and rightly so. Its roots reach back to the ancient Olympic tradition, with running, jumping and throwing forming the foundation of competitive sport.
Few sports are as universal as athletics. It brings together speed, strength, endurance, technique and mental resilience. Whether it is a 100-metre sprint, a middle-distance race, a long jump, a high jump or a throwing event, every performance represents years of dedication and sacrifice.
India’s journey in athletics has been particularly inspiring in recent years. From Neeraj Chopra’s historic Olympic triumph to the emergence of a new generation of talented sprinters, jumpers and throwers, Indian athletics has steadily strengthened its presence on the international stage.
Odisha—A New Home for Global Athletics
What makes today’s experience particularly special is the venue—Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar.
Odisha has emerged as one of India’s leading sporting destinations, with sustained investment in infrastructure, training facilities and high-performance ecosystems. Kalinga Stadium has become a symbol of this transformation.
The stadium has hosted major international competitions, including the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships in 2017, and has continued to attract prestigious athletics events. With the Continental Tour Silver meet and major international competitions on the horizon, Bhubaneswar is firmly strengthening its position on the global athletics map.
The scale of today’s event reflects that transformation: 27 nations, 187 elite athletes, 88 Indian athletes, 143 athletes from 12 Asian countries, 36 athletes ranked among the world’s Top 50, and 18 events—nine men’s and nine women’s events.
The participation of athletes from countries including Great Britain, Jamaica, Kenya, Italy, Japan, South Africa, Brazil, Nigeria, Portugal and many others gives the competition a truly international character.
Bhubaneswar—From Temple City to Sporting Capital
Bhubaneswar has traditionally been celebrated as the Temple City of India, renowned for its magnificent heritage and spiritual traditions. Today, it is also acquiring another identity—as a global sporting hub.
The city combines cultural heritage with modern infrastructure, excellent connectivity, a welcoming environment and a strong sporting ecosystem. The development of world-class facilities and high-performance centres has enabled Bhubaneswar to host some of the biggest sporting events in the country.
The transformation is significant. Sport has become an important part of Odisha’s identity and its vision for youth development. Events such as today’s Continental Tour Silver demonstrate how investment in sporting infrastructure can create opportunities not only for elite athletes but also for thousands of young people who dream of representing India.
Watching the World Compete at Kalinga
For a spectator, watching world-class athletics from such close quarters is an extraordinary experience. The atmosphere inside the stadium, the anticipation before each event, the explosive starts, the precision of every movement and the determination of athletes chasing every centimetre and every fraction of a second make athletics uniquely compelling.
What stands out most is the discipline behind every performance. A few seconds on the track or a single throw or jump is often the culmination of years of training, setbacks, sacrifice and unwavering commitment.
Seeing Indian athletes compete alongside global stars makes the experience even more meaningful. Domestic conditions, familiar surroundings and enthusiastic home support provide Indian athletes with an important platform to measure themselves against the best in the world.
Beyond Competition
Events such as the World Athletics Continental Tour Silver are about much more than medals and rankings. They expose young athletes to international standards, inspire children and youngsters watching from the stands, and demonstrate what is possible when talent is supported by world-class coaching, infrastructure and opportunity.
They also strengthen India’s position as a destination for international sport.
Today’s event at Kalinga Stadium is therefore not merely another athletics meet. It represents the coming together of global sporting excellence and India’s growing athletic ambition.
As I watched athletes from 27 nations compete with passion and determination, I felt proud to witness Bhubaneswar hosting an event of such international stature. It is a reflection of Odisha’s growing sporting confidence and India’s emergence as an increasingly important force in world athletics.
The track at Kalinga today was more than a sporting arena—it was a meeting place of nations, dreams and human potential.
And perhaps the most inspiring sight was not simply the world-class performances, but the sight of Indian athletes standing shoulder to shoulder with the best in the world, believing that they too belong on this stage.
From the Temple City to the global sporting arena, Bhubaneswar is running confidently towards a new sporting future.
