Chennai, May 10: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has elected former Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin as its legislature party leader in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

Party sources confirmed that senior leader and former DMK minister K. N. Nehru will serve as the deputy legislature party leader, while former minister E. V. Velu has been appointed as the party whip.

The DMK, with its 59 MLAs, will operate as the principal opposition in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly.

Though the TVK did not secure an outright majority in the Assembly, Joseph C. Vijay successfully garnered support from allies, including the Congress, VCK, CPI, CPI(M), and IUML. Together, they amassed 120 MLAs, surpassing the 118-member majority required to form the government.
