Dhenkanal, June 17: In a tragic incident, two sisters-in-law from the same family died after being electrocuted in Balimi police station limits of Odisha's Dhenkanal district early Tuesday morning.

The deceased have been identified as 45-year-old Ranju Dehury, wife of Bibhuti Dehury, and 40-year-old Manisha Dehury, wife of Gour Dehury. The incident occurred at around 4:30 a.m. in Taanla Sahi of Ranjagola village.

According to family members, strong winds and heavy rain on Monday night had damaged the electricity connection to their house, causing a live wire to snap and fall near the kitchen.

On Tuesday morning, Manisha Dehury reportedly came into contact with the broken electric wire while heading to the kitchen to prepare food and suffered a severe electric shock. Hearing her screams, Ranju Dehury rushed to rescue her. However, she too came in contact with the live wire, and both women became trapped in the electric current.

Ranju’s husband, Bibhuti Dehury, said the two women were electrocuted while one was trying to save the other.

Family members and villagers immediately rescued them and rushed them to Khajuriakata Community Health Centre. Due to their critical condition, they were later shifted to Hindol Sub-Divisional Hospital for advanced treatment.

However, doctors at the hospital declared both women dead.

The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the village, while local authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances that led to the fatal accident.
