Bhubaneswar, Sept 22: Concern has emerged at Nandankanan Zoological Park after two newly arrived meerkats died and another reportedly fell seriously ill, sources said.
The animals were among 58 exotic animals belonging to 14 species that arrived at the zoo from Vantara in Gujarat a few days ago.
Zoo authorities said the exact cause of the two meerkats’ deaths has not yet been established. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death. Another newly arrived meerkat is reportedly in serious condition and is receiving treatment under the observation of the zoo’s veterinary team.
Meanwhile, a newly arrived female zebra was found with a deep injury on its neck, raising another concern among zoo officials.
Authorities are examining how the injury occurred. There is speculation that the zebra may have sustained the injury after hitting an enclosure barrier, but the exact circumstances have not yet been established.
The injured zebra is currently undergoing treatment and is being closely monitored by the veterinary team.
The deaths of the two meerkats and the zebra’s injury have raised questions about the health and acclimatisation of the newly introduced animals at Nandankanan. The exact reasons behind the incidents are expected to become clearer after further veterinary examination and the post-mortem reports.
