Trump argued that repeated assaults on merchant vessels near Gulf waters demonstrate why commercial transport must steer clear of checkpoints controlled by Tehran. He stressed that his government firmly endorses the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, known as IMEC, alongside cross-border pipelines to ensure oil moves securely across international borders.
Strategic shifts in Eurasian commerce
Conceived during the 2023 New Delhi summit by India, the United States, European nations, and Gulf partners, the transit grid links South Asia to European buyers across two primary paths. The eastern leg bridges Indian ports to the Gulf, while the northern segment uses heavy rail networks across dry land to reach European ports. Moving cargo across this combined sea-and-rail route can slash shipping schedules between Mumbai and European terminals by over half compared to standard canal routes.
Recent global shipping crises have highlighted how vulnerable key trade chokepoints like the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf remain to regional instability. While construction crews have started work on selected rail sections, ports, and regional highways, participating capitals have yet to publish fixed delivery schedules or operational deadlines.
During the same gathering, the US President issued severe warnings directed at Tehran, demanding that the leadership alter its regional posture before diplomatic off-ramps close entirely.
