Puri, Jul 16: As millions of devotees gather in Puri for the world-famous Jagannath Rath Yatra, the sacred festival once again celebrates the annual journey of the Holy Trinity-Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra-yo the Gundicha Temple. For devotees, the occasion is not merely a festival but a divine reunion, reaffirming Lord Jagannath's promise to return every year after Niladri Bije.
Regarded as the eternal and infinite Lord, Jagannath is believed to govern the universe with his divine will. His annual Rath Yatra symbolises the Lord stepping out of His sanctum to bless devotees from all walks of life, dissolving barriers of caste, creed and status.
The Mysterious Rath Yatra Incident of the 1970s
Among the many stories associated with the grand festival, one remarkable incident from the 1970s Rath Yatra continues to be remembered by senior servitors as an extraordinary example of Lord Jagannath's divine play.
According to Shyamsundar Bej, President of the Mahaprabhu Darpania Sevak Nijog Sabha, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra had already completed their ceremonial Pahandi procession and were seated on their respective chariots. Lord Jagannath was then carried in the traditional Pahandi procession and reached the Charamala-the wooden ladder leading to the Nandighosha chariot.
However, instead of ascending the chariot, the Lord repeatedly stopped midway. Despite repeated efforts by the servitors, Lord Jagannath would climb a couple of steps and then mysteriously move backwards. The unusual situation continued for nearly 45 minutes, leaving thousands of devotees and servitors astonished.
As concern grew, the matter was brought to the notice of the Gajapati Maharaja, the traditional first servitor of Lord Jagannath. The King approached the chariot and gently touched the Lord from behind. Almost instantly, Lord Jagannath moved forward and ascended the chariot, bringing immense relief and joy to the devotees.
Shyamsundar Bej, who was serving near the Lord during that Rath Yatra, recalls holding the ceremonial rope and witnessing the unforgettable moment firsthand. He says the divine episode remains one of the most cherished memories of his service and resurfaces every year as Rath Yatra approaches.
Another Miraculous Moment at Gundicha Temple
Bej also recalled another dramatic incident from the same year during the concluding phase of the Pahandi procession at the Gundicha Temple. As Lord Jagannath was being carried towards the Adapa Mandap, the deity suddenly tilted sharply to one side, creating panic among the servitors and devotees. Moments later, the Lord was safely balanced and the procession continued peacefully, an incident many devotees regard as another expression of His divine will.
Devotion Fills the Grand Avenue
This year's Rath Yatra has once again transformed Puri into a sea of devotion. Lord Sudarshan has already been ceremonially placed on the Darpadalana chariot, followed by the Pahandi procession of Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra. Devotees now eagerly await the arrival of Lord Jagannath, the most anticipated moment of the festival.
The three majestic chariots stand ready before the Singhadwara of the Jagannath Temple, while lakhs of devotees line the Grand Road (Bada Danda). The air reverberates with chants of "Hari Bol," devotional hymns and the beating of traditional instruments, as faith, devotion and anticipation merge into one of the world's largest and most spiritually significant religious gatherings.
