In India, Teachers’ Day is celebrated on September 5, the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a renowned philosopher, scholar, teacher and statesman. He served as the first Vice President and second President of India.
Dr Radhakrishnan had a deep respect for education and the teaching profession. According to the popular account associated with Teachers’ Day, when his students and admirers wanted to celebrate his birthday, he suggested that instead of celebrating his birthday, the day should be dedicated to teachers.
Following this, India began officially observing Teachers’ Day on September 5 in 1962.
