New Delhi, September 3: The Supreme Court on Thursday suspended the six-month jail sentence imposed on YouTuber Gulshan Pahuja by the Delhi High Court in a criminal contempt case and ordered his immediate release from custody.
A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Sheel Nagu issued notice on Pahuja’s appeal against the High Court’s order.
The Delhi High Court had sentenced Pahuja to six months of simple imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs 2,000 in each contempt case, with the sentences to run concurrently. It had found him guilty of making remarks that allegedly scandalised the judiciary.
The High Court had observed that Pahuja showed “no regret” and made further remarks against the judicial system during the sentencing proceedings. It noted his statements expressing a lack of faith in Indian courts and his comparison of judicial arbitrariness with “dictatorship”.
The High Court had initially suspended the sentence for 60 days after Pahuja expressed his intention to challenge the order before the Supreme Court.
Advocates Manish Jain, Vikash Kumar Verma and Aditya Kaushik appeared for Pahuja before the apex court.
