Naman Dhir and Sanju Samson orchestrate a record T20I chase at Christchurch

Sanju Samson and Naman Dhir anchored a historic run chase in Christchurch on Thursday, guiding India to a four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first T20I of their five-match series. Chasing an imposing target of 226, the visiting side crossed the finish line with two deliveries to spare. Dhir finished the match in spectacular fashion, smashing a six to remain unbeaten on 42 off just 15 balls. Overcoming formidable home conditions in Oceania often proves challenging for touring sides, highlighting the significance of this high-scoring triumph.

Crucial partnerships rescue run chase

Samson set the tone early during the powerplay, dominating the New Zealand bowlers to score a rapid 67 runs from only 33 deliveries. He brought up his half-century in 23 balls, partnering with Abhishek Sharma, who contributed 29 off 12 balls. Following Samson's dismissal in the ninth over to Mitchell Santner, India faced a sudden middle-order collapse. Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan departed quickly, leaving the team under severe pressure. Shreyas Iyer stabilised the innings alongside Axar Patel, constructing a 45-run stand off 24 balls. Once Lockie Ferguson dismissed Patel for 24, Iyer and Dhir launched a fierce counterattack. Iyer contributed 42 runs from 28 deliveries before falling to Adam Milne in the nineteenth over. Dhir took control of the final overs, hitting five boundaries and two sixes to seal the dramatic win.
