Severe weather disturbance threatens eastern coastline with heavy rainfall

Severe weather conditions are developing rapidly over the Bay of Bengal, putting eastern coastal states on high alert for a very severe cyclonic storm. Meteorological experts confirm that a cyclonic circulation located near the Andaman Islands is advancing steadily in a west-northwest direction. Forecasts indicate this initial disturbance will consolidate into a distinct low-pressure area over the central and southeast Bay of Bengal by October 23. Environmental factors such as warm sea surface temperatures make October a volatile month for major storms impacting the eastern seaboard. Following its initial formation, this weather pattern is projected to gain significant destructive strength. Current data models suggest the disturbance will quickly escalate into a very severe cyclone or an even higher category storm by October 27. Forecasts project the powerful weather front will eventually cross the Andhra Pradesh shoreline just south of Visakhapatnam during the early morning hours of October 28.

Rapid system intensification expected

Global forecasting models show strong consensus regarding the dangerous potential of this oceanic disturbance. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts points toward a depression forming later this week. International weather specialist Jason Nicholls expects the storm's impacts to stretch from Andhra Pradesh up through West Bengal. Local climate tracker Parthan notes that current seasonal atmospheric patterns typically steer such disturbances along a northwestward trajectory. Former meteorological director Sarat Chandra Sahu emphasised that current marine conditions strongly favour further strengthening. He warned that warm waters could allow the system to quickly upgrade from a deep depression into a full cyclonic storm, though precise peak intensity requires closer monitoring.

Expected landfall and wind impacts

Coastal districts in Odisha will experience severe disruptions well before the storm actually reaches the mainland. Heavy downpours accompanied by dangerous wind speeds reaching between 75 and 100 kilometres per hour will begin striking coastal communities by the afternoon of October 26. Residents living in Ganjam, Puri, Gajapati, Rayagada, Nayagarh, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, and Cuttack must prepare to face the brunt of these dangerous coastal conditions until the late night hours of October 27.

Once the storm crosses the shoreline near Visakhapatnam, it will alter its track toward a north-northwest direction, dragging intense weather systems deep into inland territories. Interior districts of Odisha, specifically Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Bolangir, and Bargarh, will face heavy to very heavy rainfall. This secondary deluge is expected to last from the afternoon of October 27 through the morning of October 29, raising concerns about potential inland flooding and infrastructural damage.
