Leaders discuss expanding trade and defence cooperation in Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk for bilateral discussions at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on Thursday. Both leaders evaluated current diplomatic ties and explored opportunities to expand collaboration across key sectors like trade, technology, and defence. Tusk is currently on a three-day official visit to India, which concludes on October 23. His trip focuses on advancing the strategic partnership established between both nations earlier this year. Prior to the high-level meeting, the Polish leader visited Rajghat to lay a wreath and pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also met with Tusk on Thursday morning. Jaishankar expressed his appreciation for the productive exchange of thoughts on enhancing bilateral cooperation across multiple domains, noting his anticipation for the prime ministerial talks.

Strategic focus and economic goals

Elevating diplomatic engagement with Warsaw aligns seamlessly with India's expanding economic footprint in Central Europe. Finance and Economy Minister Andrzej Domanski, along with a prominent business delegation, is accompanying Tusk on this critical trip. Officials aim to boost annual bilateral trade from its current level of roughly USD 6 billion to USD 10 billion in the coming years.

Business forums in New Delhi will facilitate these new commercial partnerships. Observers identify space technology and defence production as primary areas for joint ventures. Furthermore, a proposed free trade agreement between India and the European Union could significantly broaden economic interactions.

Bengaluru visit and future prospects

Diplomatic relations reached a new milestone in August 2024 when both countries upgraded their connection to a Strategic Partnership during Modi's visit to Poland. This current trip marks the first time a Polish Prime Minister has visited India since 2010.

Following his engagements in the national capital, Tusk will travel to Bengaluru on Friday. He plans to interact directly with industry leaders from the Indian space and information technology sectors. These discussions will likely open new doors for technological exchange and mutual growth between the two nations. Business forums planned for both cities highlight a strong commitment to fostering private sector collaboration.
