Bhubaneswar, Oct 16: After an eight-year gap, student union elections returned to Odisha this year, witnessing extravagant campaigning, campus clashes and controversies over the use of artificial intelligence (AI).
The scale of campaigning at several colleges and universities drew attention, with large banners and hoardings appearing across campuses. In some places, candidates organised processions featuring Thar, while flower showers from JCB machines added to the spectacle.
However, the elections were also marred by incidents of violence and unrest. Reports emerged of bomb attacks on campuses, road blockades amid tension, clashes between rival groups and incidents involving swords.
Another disturbing trend was the alleged misuse of AI to target student leaders. AI-generated content was reportedly used to tarnish the personal image of several male and female student leaders, with rival student groups accused of using the technology to discredit their opponents.
The developments have raised concerns over campaign spending, campus security and the growing role of digital manipulation in student politics.
