Stand-Up comedy finds its voice in Odisha, emerging as a popular entertainment trend

Bhubaneswar, June 22: What was once considered an urban entertainment trend limited to cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru is now gaining strong popularity in Odisha. Stand-up comedy shows in Odia are drawing packed audiences, with people willingly buying tickets to enjoy live performances by local comedians.

At cafes, studios and performance spaces across Bhubaneswar, laughter-filled evenings have become increasingly common. Young comedians take the stage with a microphone and entertain audiences with humorous takes on everyday life, culture and social issues, creating an engaging live experience.

The growing popularity of stand-up comedy has also led to the emergence of dedicated venues such as Studio Forty Four and The Space, where open-mic events and live comedy shows are regularly organised. Many cafes in the capital have also started hosting comedy nights, particularly during weekends.

Ticket prices for these shows generally range from Rs 150 to Rs 1,000, reflecting a growing willingness among audiences to pay for live entertainment. Industry observers say the majority of attendees are young people between 18 and 35 years of age.

Several Odia comedians, including Akash Rout, Chiranjeevi Nayak, Vishal Mohanty, Debarchan Mishra and others, have built a loyal following through live performances and digital platforms. Many are now performing across Odisha and other parts of India, turning comedy into a viable profession.

According to comedians and event organisers, audiences who earlier consumed comedy content on mobile phones are now increasingly opting for live shows. The trend is no longer limited to Bhubaneswar, with demand growing in cities such as Cuttack, Brahmapur and Sambalpur.

With a rising number of performers, dedicated venues and paying audiences, stand-up comedy is steadily evolving into a thriving entertainment industry in Odisha, creating new opportunities for young artists and content creators.
