Indian legal scholar secures historic international maritime judicial seat
Professor Bimal N. Patel secured a seat as a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) during the United Nations voting process in New York. Serving a nine-year term from 2026 to 2035, the prominent legal expert will officially assume office on October 1. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed appreciation to the member states for supporting the Indian candidature, framing the victory as a reflection of global trust.

Voting occurred during the 36th Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) held between June 15 and June 19. This specialized international court handles maritime boundary conflicts, navigation rights, and ocean resource conservation. India has consistently prioritized maritime security and legal frameworks across the Indian Ocean region, making continuous representation on this 21-member panel a strategic diplomatic necessity.
Profile of Dr. Patel
Dr. Patel brings deep academic and regulatory experience to the international bench. Currently functioning as the Vice Chancellor of Rashtriya Raksha University in Gujarat, he also serves on the International Law Commission. His background fits the rigorous demands of the independent judicial body, which divides its seats equitably among five regional global groups to ensure balanced geopolitical perspectives.
New Delhi maintains its strong judicial footprint in the organization through this successful ballot outcome. Dr. Patel joins newly elected judges from Vietnam, Ghana, Tunisia, Russia, the Netherlands, and Brazil. He follows the tenure of Neeru Chadha, another prominent Indian jurist who has served on the tribunal since 2017 and rose to become its Vice President in late 2023.
