STA orders immediate cleaning of roads after fatal accidents

Bhubaneswar, Jan 12: The State Transport Authority (STA) has issued strict directives to remove sand, soil, and debris from both national and state highways following multiple accidents caused by slippery road conditions. Over the past few days, several two-wheeler riders have lost their lives after tires skidded on roads cluttered with sand and soil.

According to the STA, all departments responsible for road maintenance—including the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the Public Works Department, and state-controlled highways—must ensure regular cleaning of roads. Municipal corporations, municipalities, and notified area councils (NACs) have also been instructed to maintain roads under their jurisdiction.

The directive emphasizes that roads must be kept clean, skid-resistant, and free from hazards, in line with the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) codes and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways regulations. Any accumulation of sand or soil on the road will be treated as a serious maintenance failure.

The STA has also instructed authorities to immediately install warning signs or barricades wherever sand or debris is present, alerting motorists and preventing accidents. Regular inspections will be conducted by RTO officials and police authorities to ensure compliance.

“This is a critical safety measure. Keeping roads clean and hazard-free is essential for protecting lives and ensuring smooth traffic movement,” an STA spokesperson said.
