Velankanni Basilica begins its annual eleven day festival in Nagapattinam

Pilgrims from across India assembled at the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health in Nagapattinam on Saturday evening to witness the ceremonial flag-hoisting event, marking the official opening of the eleven-day annual feast. The religious gathering runs from August 29 through September 8, drawing faithful from multiple states to the famous coastal shrine in Tamil Nadu.

Sacred Rituals Open the Eleven Day Feast

Festivities began with a ceremonial procession carrying the sacred flag through the town streets toward the shrine. Clergy members, led by the Bishop of Thanjavur Diocese, blessed the flag before hoisting it on the tall church mast to loud applause and prayers. Known globally as the "Lourdes of the East," this centuries-old pilgrimage destination traces its origins to sixteenth-century Marian apparitions along the Coromandel Coast.

Special Holy Masses are scheduled throughout the celebration in multiple languages, including Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Konkani, Hindi, and English, catering to visitors from diverse linguistic backgrounds. Daily Novena prayers, spiritual services, and the traditional car procession on the penultimate day form central highlights of the calendar.

Tight Security and Transit Support In Place

District authorities have deployed over 3,000 police personnel across key sectors to manage crowd density and regulate traffic flow. Surveillance teams are monitoring sensitive zones through high-resolution drone cameras and automated facial recognition systems. Rescue boats, specialized divers, and twelve fire units remain stationed along the adjacent beach to protect visitors near the shoreline.

Public transit agencies are operating 525 special buses connecting Nagapattinam with major transit hubs like Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, and Bengaluru. Health departments have set up medical assistance booths at seven spots, backed by ten road ambulances and three quick-response bike units to handle emergencies.
