In a remarkable display of railway engineering, Indian Railways operates "Super Vasuki," the longest freight train in the country. This 3.5-kilometer-long behemoth, comprising 295 wagons pulled by six engines, is a critical component of India's industrial supply chain, designed specifically to transport massive quantities of coal to power plants across the nation.

Launched on India's 75th Independence Day, Super Vasuki represents a significant leap in freight logistics. Its primary purpose is to ensure a consistent and efficient coal supply to thermal power plants. In a single journey, the train can haul an astonishing 27,000 tonnes of coal—enough fuel to run a 3,000 MW power plant for an entire day. This carrying capacity is roughly three times that of a standard freight train, making it a game-changer for the energy sector.

Operating between Korba in Chhattisgarh and Rajnandgaon in Maharashtra, the train covers 267 kilometers in just over 11 hours. Due to its sheer size, it takes approximately four minutes for Super Vasuki to cross a station platform. Created by amalgamating five regular freight trains, its scale is so immense that walking its length would take a person nearly an hour.

The train’s name is inspired by Hindu mythology. "Vasuki" is the name of the serpent king who served as a rope during the "Samudra Manthan" (churning of the ocean). The name was chosen to symbolize the patience, strength, and vastness embodied by this extraordinary train, a true giant of the Indian Railways network.
