Puri, Aug 8: The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) is gearing up to celebrate Gamha Purnima, also known as Raksha Bandhan, tomorrow. This festival marks the birthday of Lord Balabhadra (or Balram), and as per tradition, Devi Subhadra will tie rakhi to both Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra.
The unique custom involves Patara Bisoyi servitors preparing special "Pata Rakhis," which Devi Subhadra ties to her brothers on this occasion. The preparation of the rakhis began after the completion of the Chitalagi Amavasya rituals in the temple. The temple administration provides Basunga Pata (cloth), which is then dipped in vibrant colors like red, green, purple, and yellow.
Afterward, the servitors craft four-layered rakhis. The red and yellow rakhi is meant for Lord Jagannath, while the purple and blue-colored rakhi is dedicated to Lord Balabhadra. This ritual, steeped in tradition, is an integral part of the Gamha Purnima celebrations at the temple.
