Bhubaneswar, July 28: A contractual female attendant at AIIMS Bhubaneswar has accused a male nursing officer of sexual harassment, triggering widespread agitation among hospital employees and prompting police intervention.
The incident allegedly occurred late Sunday night when the woman, a hospital attendant, was reportedly called into a doctor’s room by Nursing Officer Nanu Ram Choudhary. According to her complaint filed at Khandagiri Police Station, Choudhary locked the door and made unwelcome physical advances toward her.
Following the incident, the complainant contacted the hospital control room, which advised her to take the matter to the police. The case has since drawn the attention of local authorities, with the Inspector-in-Charge of Khandagiri Police Station and other officers visiting the hospital campus to initiate a preliminary investigation and manage growing unrest.
As news of the allegation spread, fellow hospital attendants staged a protest within the AIIMS premises, demanding the immediate suspension and arrest of the accused. Protestors also called for stringent measures to ensure the safety and dignity of women in the workplace.
Police have confirmed that an inquiry is underway and have assured the agitating staff that appropriate legal action will follow based on the investigation's outcome.
This disturbing incident adds to a growing list of sexual harassment cases reported from institutions in recent times, raising fresh concerns about workplace safety and accountability.
