Rohit Sharma ODI future safe as BCCI rubbishes retirement reports ahead of Lord's series finale

BCCI secretary firmly denies Rohit Sharma ODI retirement rumours

Rumours regarding Rohit Sharma playing his final international match on Sunday hold absolutely no truth. Devajit Saikia, BCCI secretary, firmly rejected growing claims that the upcoming Lord's clash against England will end the veteran opener's legendary career. Speculation intensified after Rohit struggled during recent matches in Edgbaston and Cardiff, where he scored low totals. Saikia clarified that team management never discussed dropping the former skipper. He emphasized that Rohit remains an integral part of India's current plans. Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak also backed the senior player, stating he expects a brilliant performance in the upcoming decider.

Future selection plans remain fluid

Earlier reports suggested selectors wanted to groom younger opening batters for the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup in Africa. Conversations supposedly began during IPL 2026, involving head coach Gautam Gambhir. Rohit, now 39, recently became India's oldest male cricketer to appear in a One Day International. He achieved this milestone against Afghanistan in June, scoring heavily during that specific bilateral series.

Despite leading his squad to an ICC Champions Trophy victory last March, his spot faced intense scrutiny. Shubman Gill replaced him as ODI captain in October 2025.

Record breaking batting legacy

Currently, Rohit plays exclusively in the 50-over format. He previously retired from T20 Internationals following a victorious 2024 World Cup campaign, and he left Test cricket in May 2025.

Statistically, he ranks as the seventh-highest run-getter historically, accumulating 11,757 runs. He uniquely holds the record for the highest individual score of 264. Furthermore, he remains the only batter possessing three double-centuries. His 33 centuries place him third overall, proving his immense value to Indian sports history. Fans eagerly anticipate his next big knock.
